Mistral AI partners with NVIDIA to accelerate open frontier models
CompanyAs a founding member of the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, Mistral AI is contributing large-scale model development and multimodal capabilities.
At Mistral AI, we believe the future of artificial intelligence is open, collaborative, and built for everyone. Today, we’re proud to announce our participation as a founding member in the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, a groundbreaking global initiative uniting leading AI labs to advance open, frontier-level foundation models. As part of this strategic partnership, Mistral AI and NVIDIA plan to co-develop frontier open-source AI models, combining Mistral AI’s specialized model architecture and full-stack AI platform with NVIDIA’s compute resources, model-development tools, and synthetic-data generation pipelines. As a founding member of the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, Mistral AI will contribute its proprietary training techniques, multimodal capabilities, and enterprise-grade fine-tuning tools—while leveraging NVIDIA’s compute, tools & technologies to scale training and optimization. This builds off prior scientific collaborations together with NVIDIA, including the development of the Mistral Nemo model.
Why open collaboration matters
Open models are the cornerstone of democratized AI. As part of this commitment, today Mistral AI is releasing Mistral Small 4 to empower developers, researchers, and organizations worldwide to build, specialize, and innovate without barriers (read more here).
By joining the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, we’re taking another major step toward shaping a future where AI is transparent, accessible, and tailored to diverse needs.
“Open frontier models are how AI becomes a true platform,” said Arthur Mensch, cofounder and CEO of Mistral AI. “Together with NVIDIA, we will take a leading role in training and advancing frontier models at scale. By shaping the capabilities of these systems from the ground up, we can help establish a global foundation for AI that empowers developers to build the next generation of applications.”
What this means for the AI community
The coalition’s first initiative is a base model, trained on NVIDIA DGX Cloud, which will underpin the upcoming NVIDIA Nemotron 4 family. These models will be open-sourced, providing a shared foundation for post-training and specialization. For Mistral AI, this aligns perfectly with our mission: to put AI in everyone’s hands.
Key benefits:
- Shared expertise: By pooling resources and knowledge, we reduce duplication and accelerate progress across the AI ecosystem.
- Customization: Organizations can fine-tune models for their unique domains, regions, and use cases.
- Control: Open models support local control and compliance, ensuring AI works for everyone, everywhere.
Mistral AI’s role in the coalition
As a founding member, Mistral AI is contributing large-scale model development and multimodal capabilities, helping to define state of the art in the open model ecosystem.
Mistral AI brings to the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition cutting-edge model architectures, deep expertise in model customization through pre-training, post-training, and fine-tuning, and a proven track record in building specialized, high-efficiency models that enterprises already rely on. Together, with NVIDIA, we’re making training more efficient across the AI ecosystem and providing developers with a shared, open foundation to build upon—faster and at scale.
Our collaboration with NVIDIA and other coalition members reflects a shared commitment to:
- Transparency: Open-sourcing models, data, and frameworks for global access.
- Collaboration: Fostering a community where innovation is collective, not siloed.
- Impact: Enabling developers to build the next wave of AI applications on a robust, open foundation.
The road ahead
The NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition is just the beginning. Together, we’re setting a new standard for how AI is developed and deployed, one that prioritizes openness, collaboration, and real-world impact. Stay tuned for updates.
